About Mary Gordon
Mary Gordon Spence was reared in a small Texas town where chasing after the insecticide-spewing fogging machine was the highlight of every kid's summer. She was elected first grade Valentine queen and Miss Friendly of Brownwood High School; and, she was the first on her block to get a hula hoop. Those early successes, along with copious amounts of DDT, helped shape her positive attitude and her wise and endearing humor.
A master of diversity, Mary Gordon (that's her double-first-name) has lived in Latin America, taught kindergarten to college, written Texas history materials, drafted legislation, directed statewide environmental programs and worked for a former president. Throughout her career, her storytelling, wit and wisdom have been legendary.
Although she changed her major many times, Mary Gordon graduated with her class from The University of Texas at Austin and received an MA from la Universida de las Americas in Puebla, Puebla, Mexico. She also studied advanced mediation at Harvard-MIT's School of Public Affairs.
Mary Gordon is the mother of two way-above-average children and their way-above average spouses, and grandmother of the brilliant and talented William, Caroline, Henry, Griffin and Hazel.
Through her remarkable abilities to find and celebrate the magic in the mundane - and the brighter and quirkier sides of life - Mary Gordon provides pathways for others to discover their own magic. That's why audiences love to hear her speak, listen to her commentaries, read her columns and savor her stories in books and magazines.
